Supporting The Intersection Between Faith & Personal Identity

Upon our first consultation, we find that many clients ask our therapists if they are open to incorporating their faith into the counselling work. We are.

What is Faith-Based Counselling?

Many of our clients are looking for a Christian counsellor, a Muslim counsellor, or spiritual counsellor to incorporate their faith into their therapeutic journey.

We pair our clients to the counsellor best suited for them, ensuring that there are no religious conflicts or personal concerns for the client.

Throughout our counselling, we embrace and incorporate aspects of the client’s faith and spirituality where appropriate. It is our utmost belief that can help empower our clients to find meaning in their circumstances, particularly if this is important for the client.

How do I Find a Faith-Based Therapist?

In Alberta, any counsellor can refer to themselves as a Christian counsellor, a Muslim ocunsellor, or a Budhist counsellor, and so on. It is not a regulated term.

Here are some cues to assist you in finding a counsellor that is a good fit for you:

  • Ensure the counsellor has the proper educational background, i.e. a minimum of a bachelors degree, as well as a Masters degree.

  • If you are looking get insurance coverage, then it is important to check with your provider who you are covered with work with (e.g. some insurance companies only cover Registered Psychologists, or Registered Provisional Psychologists).

  • A fundamental aspect to success in therapy is the relationship that is formed between you and the counsellor, so during your initial consultation, make sure to ask your counsellor all pertinent questions you may have, including ones pertaining to your faith and spirituality.

  • Ask your counsellor about their intended approach (such as cognitive-behavioural therapy) and what is needed from you to be successful.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is faith-based counselling different from regular counselling?

While the common goal in any type of counselling is to assist clients in achieving their overarching counselling goals, in faith-based counselling, the therapist incorporates the client's faith into the counselling work (i.e. clients are looking for a Christian counsellor, Muslim counsellor, spiritual counsellor, etc.).

Is faith-based counselling covered by benefits?

Depending on your benefit plan, your faith-based counselling sessions should be covered. If you are unsure, call your insurance provider and find out the coverage for your child in receiving psychological services. All of our Registered Psychologists, Registered Provisional Psychologists and Registered Social Workers are covered by most insurance plans.

How long is each session?

Sessions will be 60-minutes long

What do I need to bring?

Just yourself. Some clients also find that bringing a journal to take down notes during sessions is helpful, but not required.

Will my therapist practice the same faith as me?

Absolutely. If you would like your therapist to practice the same faith as yours, then we can refer you the appropriate therapist. If that is not important, then we can find a therapist that understands and respects your faith, and is able to incorporate it in your counselling work.
